Sugar Land Veterinary Specialists Welcomes Dr. Kara Sessums
Sugar Land VeterinarySpecialists welcomes Dr. Kara Sessums to our team of board-certified specialists! Dr. Sessums' experience encompasses both medical and surgical neurology. She received her B.S. in Veterinary Science in 1997,followed by her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2000 from Texas A&M University.
After graduation, she practiced emergency medicine in the Dallas area for 3 years. In 2004, she completed an internship in neurology at the Dallas Veterinary Surgical Center, followed by a 3 year residency in small animal neurology at Florida State University and Animal Neurology & Neurosurgery of Texas. She became board certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, subspecialty of Neurology in 2008. Since then, she has practiced in multi-specialty private referral practices in Colorado, and most recently Brooklyn, New York.
Her clinical interests lie in the areas of neurosurgery, management of patients with refractory epilepsy, treatment of Granulomatous Meningoencephalomyelitis GME), and clinical applications of MRI. She has participated extensively in neurological CE, both medical and surgical, and holds active memberships in AVMA and ACVIM.
Dr. Sessums is excited about starting Sugar Land's 1st veterinary neurology service. She will receive patients by referral during regular daytime hours, and after hours/weekend neurological emergency coverage will be available 365 days/year through a combined effort of the neurology & surgery teams.
With the expertise of other board certified specialists, and a dedicated team of experienced overnight ER doctors and nurses, patients are offered the most comprehensive care 24/7. Additionally, the availability of state-of-the art in-house diagnostics such as MRI and CT allow for practicing the best medicine, and offering clients options.
As a native Texan originally from the Dallas area (Mansfield, to be exact!), Dr. Sessums is excited about returning to the warmer Texas climate. She shares her home with Scarlett, her infant daughter, and Noble, her canine daughter. Outside of work, she enjoys running, football (go Cowboys!), grilling, and most importantly...Mexican food!
